Adaptation of the Shearography Method for Detection of Micro-Defects in Aluminium Welded Joints and Thin-Walled Composites

Abstract

A novel non-destructive technology detects ultra-small defects (≥0.3 mm diameter) in thin-walled aluminium friction stir welds and composite materials. The system integrates digital shearography with automated thermal loading using a modified portable Michelson interferometer. Experimental validation confirms reliable detection of 0.3 mm defects through optimized strain anomaly analysis, demonstrating capability for precision non-destructive testing.
