Mechanical Properties of Magnesium-Based Alloys for Orthopedic Applications

Abstract
Magnesium alloys with Ca, Zn and Ga were obtained by induction melting, followed by EB-PVD of Ag and Cu nanoparticles. Their elastic modulus measured using nanoindentation is in the range of elasticity of human cortical bone tissues up to 30 GPa. Two-phase structure and the uniformity of alloying elements distribution were confirmed by SEM/EDX, XRF and XRD. Adhesion strength of coatings exceeds the minimum required value of 22 MPa and their antimicrobial properties were also medically approved.
